Lancers make winning start in Hockey India League-V

Last year’s runners-up Kalinga Lancers got off to a winning start in the 5th Hockey India League, edging out Delhi Waveriders by a solitary goal here at Kalinga Stadium Hockey Complex today. Drag-flicker Gurjinder Singh scored the all-important goal, converting a penalty corner in the 47th minute. He received a cash prize of Rs 50,000 as the scorer of the Coal India Goal of the Match.

German mid-fielder Moritz Fuerste, who led Kalinga Lancers with efficiency today, bagged Man of the Match, that carried Rs 50,000. The Most Entertaining Player of the Match was awarded to Amit Rohidas from Kalinga Lancers that came with a prize money of Rs 25,000.

Earlier, the match was inaugurated by Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in the presence of International Hockey Federation president Narinder Dhruve Batra. Kalinga Lancers will play their second home match here against defending champions Ranchi Rays tomorrow.
